Greek Town was the largest and best-known urban community of Greeks in the United States for much of the early twentieth century, and was a large part of the Chicago cultural and culinary experience. It was even the birthplace of the gyro in the US. In the summer of 1980 the idea of then-mayor Jane Byrne, was to bring all of these cultures together in one event known as "The Taste of Chicago." This one-day event has since grown into a must-attend ten-day event located in Grant Park.
