Business Roundtable Climate Resolve Workshop To Showcase Best Practices For Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions

JACKSON HOLE, WY | Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Fourth Workshop Will Include International Business Dialogue on Climate Change

Business Roundtable today began its fourth greenhouse gas (GHG) management workshop to help companies from all sectors of the economy better manage their GHG emissions. The three-day workshop, which seeks to continue building on the success of the Roundtable’s Climate RESOLVE (Responsible Environmental Steps, Opportunities to Lead by Voluntary Efforts) program, will focus on the latest strategies to address GHG management, including energy efficiency, sequestration, renewables, GHG accounting and international challenges.

With more than 100 Roundtable member companies now participating in the voluntary Climate RESOLVE program, the 2005 workshop will put the Roundtable’s efforts into context by addressing the political and policy arena regarding GHG management both in the U.S. and in other regions of the world.

“A desire to address climate change is being expressed throughout the world, and major corporations regardless of business sector are being held accountable by the public, shareholders, policymakers and the global community for rising GHG emissions,” said Michael G. Morris, Vice Chairman of the Roundtable’s Environment, Technology & the Economy Task Force and Chairman, President and CEO of American Electric Power. “Climate RESOLVE calls on companies to take voluntary steps to control their GHG emissions.

“The central focus of the workshop is to offer companies practical hands-on assistance with creating and implementing GHG reduction programs, and companies from a variety of sectors will showcase best practices in managing those programs,” Morris added. “Many companies have found that the first step in managing GHG emissions is the greatest challenge, and this workshop could help companies see both the merits of action and a path to get there.” The workshop, which is being held in Jackson Hole, WY, will include discussions with officials from the White House and Congress. In addition, companies experienced in managing GHG emissions such as 3M, Chevron, DuPont, General Electric and General Motors will give presentations on how to collect and manage energy data, reduce energy costs, set company energy efficiency goals, and how building tenants and landlords can work together to improve energy efficiency.

The workshop activities will also include a dialogue with other international business organizations to discuss how the international business community can collaborate on this global issue. “The dialogue with our international counterparts is intended to explore how we could work together to help meet objectives set forth at the recent G-8 meeting by helping companies manage GHG emissions through voluntary actions,” said John J. Castellani, President of Business Roundtable. “We believe that taking action to improve energy efficiency is not only a prudent business practice but a responsible corporate response to a timely global challenge.” The Roundtable’s Climate RESOLVE initiative was launched three years ago, and previous workshops for companies on managing GHG emissions have been held in Colorado Springs (2004), San Francisco (2003) and Washington, D.C. (2003).
