Children’s Technology Workshop Develops Literacy Program for Pre-Schoolers

It’s bedtime in the Elumir household and Ekko, 3, is about to negotiate a critical part of her day which book Dad, Errol, will read before lights out. Berenstain Bears ranks number one for Ekko, but it takes some convincing her Dad, who like many parents becomes a little grumpy when he has to read the same book he’s read daily for the last two weeks. Ever wondered why it is that your pre-schooler insists on reading the same book over and over? Author and educator Josephine Chilton Pearce explains that hearing a story forms and strengthens neural pathways, and the strengthened connections between the different parts of the brain allow a child to more easily absorb further learning. It also helps to stimulate imagination, the very essence of creativity.

This attracted the attention of Darryl Reiter, President of Children’s Technology Workshop and a former teacher himself. Just last year he was looking for a way to expand his engineering & technology workshops for 7 to 14 year old children, to suit an even younger age group. Over the next 6 months aided by a programmer, teaching specialist and an engineer, he created the Early Literacy Program.

Kids love it. Phonics drills are practiced using a laptop, headphones and a program that teaches letter recognition. Each child learns at their own pace. The digital storytelling software helps improve listening, comprehension and story sequencing skills. Craft activities off the computer help develop creativity and dexterity in little fingers. Early Literacy Programs will be running for two weeks during the summer and at various locations throughout Toronto in the fall. For more information call 416-425-2289.
