This attracted the attention of Darryl Reiter, President of Childrens Technology Workshop and a former teacher himself. Just last year he was looking for a way to expand his engineering & technology workshops for 7 to 14 year old children, to suit an even younger age group. Over the next 6 months aided by a programmer, teaching specialist and an engineer, he created the Early Literacy Program.
Kids love it. Phonics drills are practiced using a laptop, headphones and a program that teaches letter recognition. Each child learns at their own pace. The digital storytelling software helps improve listening, comprehension and story sequencing skills. Craft activities off the computer help develop creativity and dexterity in little fingers. Early Literacy Programs will be running for two weeks during the summer and at various locations throughout Toronto in the fall. For more information call 416-425-2289.
