Slim And Tone Set To Make Women's Express Workout Clubs An International Affair

YARDLEY, PENNSYLVANIA / USA | Saturday, July 30, 2005

The Slim and Tone master franchise rights for New Zealand were recently acquired by TANZ Group Ltd, owned by Lena and John Tansey, a Swedish / NZ couple presently living overseas. The Tanseys plan to open at least 10 clubs in the country. The franchising rights for Scandinavia were also purchased by a husband and wife team, Karin and Ingemar Ericsson, who plan to open 40 plus clubs in the four country region.

A first of its kind in Scandinavia, Karin Eriksson is certain the concept will take flight. As an avid fitness buff, personal trainer and aerobics instructor, Karin understands the pressures women feel to get an effective workout while managing busy schedules. “In addition,” she says, “this business opportunity appeals to many women like me, women who are both concerned with their personal well being and interested in taking control of their career.” Slim and Tone allows its franchisees to adapt their programs to the needs of their own local members, a benefit that translates well into an international market, where trends may be different from those in the United States. “Women of New Zealand are embracing the express workout, and Slim and Tone will be able to provide them the custom fitness experience they are looking for,” says Lena Tansey.

Since Slim and Tone began franchising in early 2003, founder Betsy Ludlow has piloted the company to amazing growth. The company currently has grown to 150 locations in 29 states in a little more than two years, with clubs also in Costa Rica (2), Canada (1) and Mainland China (4). Ludlow, a former marketing executive with American Express, wants to grow Slim and Tone to 1,000 locations by the end of 2008 and become a recognized leader in women’s express fitness.

Founded in 2002, it didn’t take long for Slim and Tone to make an impression in the business marketplace. In November 2004, Slim and Tone was purchased outright by NutriSystem - a leader in the weight management consumer market - making NutriSystem the first in the industry to provide customers a complete diet and exercise program for successful weight loss.

While others may have popularized the women’s 30-minute express workout, Slim and Tone has improved the concept and differentiated itself in a number of ways: Slim and Tone features state-of-the-art, “third generation” fitness equipment that’s not only easier to use and more comfortable, but offers nine adjustable settings instead of just one; clubs are open all day and on weekends; members can receive personalized programs in diet and fitness; and certified trainers are on staff in most of its clubs.

In early 2005, Slim and Tone partnered with Edwards Global Services, Inc. (EGS), an international franchise development firm based in Irvine, Calif., to determine where international franchise efforts should be targeted. “We have found this to be a franchise that is well accepted and desired worldwide,” said EGS President William Edwards. "Expansion plans also include other countries in Asia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico and Australia by 2006."
