Roseville resident opens branch of Cincinnati-based franchise

A local mom is encouraging other mothers to use their baby strollers and flex their "mommy muscles" with a new-to-Roseville approach to exercise.

StrollerFit, a Cincinnati-based franchise, is a program designed as a blend of exercise, infant and child development and group dynamics. Roseville's Kelly Davenport, mother of 13-month-old Shane, celebrates the start of her Roseville StrollerFit this month.

"It's such a time in your life of redefinition in so many ways," Davenport said, explaining her desire to find something that melded her newfound love of being a mom and her pre-mom life and health-conscious lifestyle. "I feel really excited about finding such an incredible franchise network to be a part of." Davenport said StrollerFit classes offer a great workout and social opportunity for moms, dads, grandparents or other caregivers, and their stroller-aged children.

"You can work at your own intensity and everybody's welcome," she said. "You're going to exercise and feel better and if you're healthy you're going to take better care of your family." Davenport hopes the classes will set good habits for both parent and child.

"I wanted Shane to know from an early age that taking time to exercise is as important as brushing your teeth," she said.

StrollerFit's official Roseville grand opening is set for Jan. 26, but classes began Monday when about 10 moms and strollers took over Oak Valley Church, where classes will be held until warmer weather permits sessions in local parks. Classes, for now, are held at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"Everybody ready? Let's go! The kids are saying it's time to go," Davenport told the group of mothers.

Everyone warmed up with some marching, tapping and reaching, while some of the babies bobbled their heads to the music.

"How are you feeling? Heart rate going up?" Davenport asked.

"Oh yeah," one mom responded.

The 50-minute sessions are planned to offer equal parts exercise for mom and entertainment for the young ones.

"Make faces at your baby," Davenport suggested during the warm-up.

"Don't forget to say hello - Hi sweetie!" she offered as moms hopped around the strollers for basketball shuffles.

The methods might have felt somewhat silly to the moms, like singing "I'm A Little Teapot" during quad stretches and playing peek-a-boo during calf raises. But that's the point for this child-friendly workout.

"The unpredictability adds to the fun and the charm of the class," Davenport said of the parent-and-child interactions.

Monica Massie attended Monday's session with 6-month-old Westin. The Rocklin mom of two was drawn to StrollerFit because she could bring her young son with her.

"It seems to be a comfortable atmosphere," she said. "It's perfect for me. It's nice because I feel like there's a lot of range in intensity." Massie's neighbor Estella Gonzales heard about Monday's class from Davenport - the two know each other from local moms' groups. The Rocklin mother of 13-month-old Sofia appreciated StrollerFit's mom-and-me approach to fitness.

"I could do it with her," she explained. "I didn't have to worry about getting day care so I could work out." Gonzales said she was pleasantly surprised by the results of the first session.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but it got my heart up. I was sweating and breathing hard." Nicole Daino of Roseville came to Monday's session with little Antonio, 14 months. She appreciated "being with a bunch of other moms with babies, and obviously getting in shape too," she said.
