Getting Creative After A Cremation

ST. PETERSBURG | Thursday, March 03, 2005

More people are shopping for cremations with unique final destinations for themselves, their loved ones and even their pets. Cremation - now the choice of 28 percent of Americans and nearly 50 percent of Floridians - has been gaining on traditional burial for three decades. Ashes are being packed into fireworks, incorporated into artificial reefs or compressed into synthetic diamonds. In Crystal River, the Eternal Ascent Society releases biodegradable balloons filled with helium and containing the ashes of humans, pets or both. The balloons float to an altitude of five miles, where they freeze and burst, scattering the contents. Prices range from $1,000 to $2,000 for humans and are about $600 for pets.
