Garnerville franchise sells a company-best 811 ribbons
Just-A-Buck Licensing, Inc. has concluded an extensive fundraising program in each of its 44 locations, raising $6,202 to benefit local soldiers who have recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. The Goshen-based dollar store franchise, which operates stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, held a promotion selling yellow paper ribbons at the cost of one dollar with all the proceeds benefiting troops and their families from the Alpha Company of the 2/108th Infantry Battalion. The 700-man unit includes 150 soldiers from the metropolitan area currently stationed at Camp Smith in Peekskill. The camp is a 2,000-acre training site for the New York National Guard. The Just-A-Buck Garnerville franchise, located on 50 West Ramapo Road, sold 811 ribbons during the promotion. The amount was the highest ribbon total of any store in the country. First Sergeant Joseph Herald of the Alpha Company visited the Garnerville Just- A-Buck last month, where he was presented with a check by franchise owners Angel and Jeanette Caballero and Just-A-Buck CEO Steven Bakst. --more-- Just-A-Buck: Yellow ribbon fundraiser -- 2 "We are so thankful to the men and women of our military and this promotion is a small token of our gratitude," said Bakst. "We are thrilled to see this support go to our deserving troops and their families." Last month, the company returned from a tour of duty that began on Oct. 1, 2003. While in action, the company trained Iraqi National Guardsmen and patrolled Iraqi cities for insurgents. The company suffered one casualty, Army Spc. Segun Frederick Akintade, a Brooklyn native who was killed in a mortar attack on Oct. 28, 2004. The local troops remain stationed at Camp Smith and are awaiting word whether they will be returning to action. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone at Camp Smith and overseas," said Bakst.
