- Clean Roof Gutters. Roof gutters can become clogged with debris after a long fall and winter. All homeowners should inspect and clean their roof gutters before April's showers, installing gutter guards as necessary. - Have Chimney Swept and Cleaned. Now that you are no longer in need of extra heat, have your fireplace's chimney and flues swept and cleaned in preparation for next year.
- Paint Your House and Fences. Spring is a good time to paint fences and the exterior of your homeespecially wood surfaces. Painting your home and fences protects your property from the summer heat and sun. In addition, wood decks should be sealed once every year. - Replace Torn Window Screens. Oftentimes window screens become damaged over time. Replacing window screens prevents insects from getting into your home and helps to keep you comfortable while you enjoy the springtime weather on your screened porch. - Clean Vents and Seal Your Home. Spring and summer mean climbing temperatures, so chances are that your air conditioning system will soon become your best friend during the season's warmer months. Make sure to clean your air conditioning vents and to tightly seal cracks and leaks that may appear in the walls of your home or in your basement.
- Plant springtime Flowers. Nothing says spring like a blooming flower. Homeowners should take advantage of spring and have their lawn and gardens mulched and fertilized. Seasonable flowers should be planted in early spring in order to take advantage of the natural blooming cycle. - Test Outdoor Plumbing and Sump Pump. Make sure to connect and test all hoses and sprinkler systems early on in the spring season. If your hoses were left outdoors during the winter the cold and snow could have damaged or destroyed them. In addition, always test, clean, and lubricate your home's sump pump before spring's rainy season.
- Replace Smoke Detector Batteries. Daylight Savings Time (April 2nd) should serve as a reminder to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. In addition, you should review and rehearse your family's fire escape plan.
- Make Sure Your Cooling System is Functioning. After Spring, always comes Summer. Make sure that your family stays cool as the weather heats up by making sure that your cooling system is functioning properly.
