Owens Corning Study Reveals Significant Growth Opportunities For Manufactured Housing Market

Energy Efficiency, Noise Control and Easier to Understand Upgrade Packages Hold Key to Greatest Profit Increases

A comprehensive study released today by leading building materials manufacturer Owens Corning (OWENQ.OB) revealed significant opportunities for the manufactured housing industry to enhance the overall buying and living experience for manufactured homebuyers and ensure continued long-term growth. The fact that 12 percent of respondents indicated they would purchase manufactured homes, and only two percent actually did, shows that the industry will miss future sales and growth if it does not overcome barriers, find solutions to unmet needs and leverage marketing opportunities.

For the study, over 1,200 households intending to buy a manufactured home, 500 recent manufactured home purchasers and 200 manufactured home dealers were surveyed. Key areas of opportunity for recent home buyers include the need for: 1. More Energy Efficient Homes: On average, recent purchasers would pay $2,869 more for an energy efficient home, while dealers felt consumers would only pay $1,394 more. In addition: 85 percent are willing to pay more for an energy efficient home 85 percent believe an energy efficient home means a high quality home 82 percent believe buying an energy efficient home was important 2. Quieter Homes: On average, recent purchasers would pay $1,629 more for a home with better noise control, while dealers felt consumers would only pay $642 more. In addition: 69 percent are willing to pay more for a home with good noise control 76 percent believe a home with better noise control means a higher quality home 63 percent believe that buying a home that was very quiet was important 3. Easier Upgrade Options: Ninety-three percent of recent home purchasers said they would prefer a simple and understandable presentation of all of their options when they are preparing to buy a home.

4. A Quality Rating: Seventy-eight percent of recent manufactured home buyers said that they want to buy a well-built, quality home.

5. An Enhanced, Streamlined Purchasing Process: From finding the right dealer, to finding the right home, to financing and follow up, four out of 10 households think the process of purchasing a HUD home is difficult.

"We continue to see significant opportunity for the manufactured housing industry," said Pete Scharfenberg, Owens Corning business manager of manufactured housing. "At the heart of this study was a desire to truly understand the needs and values of manufactured homeowners, find ways to improve their ownership experience and work with our builder customers to help meet those needs and strengthen the long-term health and competitive position of this market."
