Ceiling Expert Returns To Franchising

Thursday, February 20, 2003

Glenn Scheel has been a franchisee since age 19, when he and a friend opened a Carvel. A few years later, he switched to the ceiling cleaning business as a franchisee of the now-defunct Ceiling Doctor.

While Ceiling Doctor may have gone under, Scheel stayed on top by opening his own ceiling restoration company. He was soon recognized as a leader in this small field and would often get calls from around the country for his service.

That got him thinking about venturing back into the franchise business. Last year, he opened ReCeil It International, based in Copiague.

"I've been asked to go to different states to Chicago, Georgia, Maine and New Mexico. There's not enough qualified restorers to do this," Scheel said. "So I decided to franchise and get two or three in every state." ReCeil It International restores and cleans ceilings in commercial properties for a fraction of the cost of ceiling replacements, Scheel said. It also resurfaces ceiling tiles.

Scheel brought in a collection of high-powered professionals to get the endeavor off the ground. They included: Harold Kestenbaum, of counsel at the Uniondale law firm of Farrell Fritz; Saunderson & Associates, an Illinois-based public relations firm that specializes in franchising; and Chicago-based iFranchise Group, which developed a 200-page training manual for franchisees.

Scheel is advertising in Wall Street Journal's franchise section as well as Entrepreneur and other small-business magazines. And in April, he'll exhibit at the International Franchise Expo in Washington D.C., which draws between 8,000 and 10,000 prospective franchisees, Scheel said.

Scheel wants to be an exemplary franchisor. He knows first hand what it's like to feel abandoned while out on jobs when franchisors didn't offer adequate support.

"I will never let that happen. There's support in return for royalties. I learned from the school of hard knocks. Any franchisee can learn from my mistakes and make money," Scheel said.

In addition to ReCeil It's six-day training course, franchisees will receive "drop-in angel" visits from trained personnel and toll-free support. He bought the number 1-800-Ceiling, so that the company can set up appointments for any facility needing ceiling restoration nationwide. Headquarters will schedule the first 50 appointments for franchisees. The $35,000 franchise fee will also include the tools and materials.

He hopes to have five franchisees in the Northeast and one in California within one year. "Happy franchisees are the easiest way to sell additional franchises," Scheel said. "If they say, ‘Glenn does a great job and gives support', you'd buy in."
