Davey Cimildora and Paul Padlick, owners of the franchise, began operating in August. Their franchise covers Cayuga and Onondaga counties.
Theirs is the latest franchise of Systems Paving, Inc. of Newport Beach, Calif. The company, which is privately held, started in 1992 and began franchising about five years ago, Padlick says.
Systems Paving, which Padlick says generated $40 million in sales in 2004 and is on track to do about $50 million this year, has 11 company-owned locations. Nine are in California.
In addition to Syracuse, the company has seven other franchises in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Kansas City, KS, and Kansas City, MO.
The company's stones come from several manufacturers around the country and can be used for driveways, walkways, patios, and pool decks. The material is actually more durable than traditional paving surfaces and is guaranteed for life, Cimildora says.
"This is a product that rather than just paving a driveway, actually increases the value of the home," he says. "It has beautiful aesthetic value as well as being very sound structurally." The stones hold up equally well in harsh Northeast winters as they do in much warmer Southern California. Systems Paving's method of preparing the base for the stones helps them tolerate temperature changes better than traditional paving surfaces.
The stones also have joints that allow them to expand and contract more easily than a single, solid surface, Cimildora says.
Cimildora and Padlick found out about Systems Paving on the Internet. The pair had been looking for franchise opportunities. Padlick's background is in accounting and Cimildora's is in sales.
Systems Paving generally looks for franchise owners that have a business background, they say.
Paving Stones are popular in other parts of the world, Cimildora says. One of the owners of Systems Paving, Larry Green, came from South Africa where he had been in the business for most of his life.
The stones have proven popular in California, Systems Paving's home. The Northeast is probably one of the last places the stones have yet to invade fully.
"They've been popular in Boston, for the franchise there," Padlick says. "We believe it will be just as popular here." The company has products available for multiple income levels. Costs can vary widely depending on the stones, job size, and design customers choose, Padlick adds.
Current marketing plans for the local franchise include participation in home shows and direct-mail campaigns, owners say. The franchise occupies about 800 square feet on Genessee Street. It currently employs seven.
Padlick and Cimildora say they will probably hire an additional eight to ten enployees next year. They are also considering opening a satellite office in Rochester that would serve Monroe County. They may open that office as soon as next year.
They anticipate initial annual sales of about $1 million.
Systems Paving is also aggressively looking to add more franchises in the Northeast, Cimildora says. The company is interested in Buffalo, as well as the metropolitan-New York area, he says.
