Five high school seniors from various parts of the country will be receiving an extra graduation present in the next few weeks. As a result of a partnership between United Check Cashing centers and Travelers Express/MoneyGram, a local student [name] from [high school name] in [town] will be receiving a $1,500 grant to apply toward his / her educational expenses at [college name]. [Franchise owner name], the local franchise owner of the United center at [store address] will present [student's name] with his / her check at a special ceremony on [day and date]. The 1st annual "Uniting Scholars with Dollars" program was sponsored by over 60 participating United centers throughout the country. The funds were raised through donations made by these centers based on every Travelers Express money order sold over a three-month period last fall. The funds collected by the United centers were matched by both Travelers Express/MoneyGram and United Financial Services Group. A total of $7,500 was raised, a very successful effort for this first time endeavor. Dozens of students submitted applications whose criteria was based on demonstrated leadership skills in school and local community activities, financial need and academic achievement. Along with the completed application, students were required to prepare an essay about the person who most influenced them during their life. They also needed to furnish two letters of recommendation: one detailing local community service and the other detailing extracurricular school activities. To complete the selection process, ten finalists participated in a phone interview by a selection committee of six executives from United's Financial Services Group and Travelers Express/MoneyGram.
