Doke is located 20 miles to the north is Nepal, 60 miles to NNW is Darjeeling. In tea terms the area is to the west of the Dooars.
In an area of 400 acres beside the river Doke, lying in the foothills of the Himalayas, this serene area called "Doke." is a very quite place. This region is impoverished to the extent that people eat one meal a day and ladies have a single cloth on their body. The best way to develop this area was not by giving of grants or distributing money or food, the answer was -- "Work and utilization of land ".
Mr. Rajiv Lochan, a senior tea planter, took the initiative and today 65 acres of land is planted with Tea and is yeilding very good results and the teas are being sold worldwide at a premium price as these special White teas are from the Land of Buddha. The garden workers are paid well, and also share in the profits of the garden.
A foundation called Indus Foundation was set up to take care of the funds and profit earned from the sales proceeds of Doke White tea. This foundation takes care of the education of poor children from this region.
We are really gratefull to all the people selling Doke White tea and thank them for donating an extra 5 USD per kilo, a donation that makes a very large economic impact in this area.
