Sunshine Receives Scroll From Toronto Mayor David Miller

Peter van Stralen, Seth van Stralen and Valdir Lopo of Sunshine Grounds Care, were on hand at Toronto city Hall to accept a scroll in recognition of our contributions toward the Tree Advocacy Program, and to place our brass leaf on the Tree Hall of Fame. The Tree Advocacy Program Trees are the lifelines of Toronto. They make our city a better place to live in many different ways. Whether it's by cleaning our air and protecting us from the sun, or contributing to the positive image of our City, trees make Toronto a better place to live. Some of the trees in Toronto's parks and ravines are over 200 years old and represent an important part of Toronto's natural history. However, almost constant urban development in our region over the last 200 years has created a difficult environment in which to sustain the urban forest.

In response to this continuing urbanization, City Council approved a Tree Advocacy Planting Program for Toronto in 2000. The program seeks to leave a legacy of trees for future generations by initiating tree planting along City streets, arterial roads, neighbourhood parks and in ravines. Since its inception, the Tree Advocacy Planting Program has planted over 400,000 trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants at over 300 locations across the City.
