Recruitment Industry Success Exceeds All Economic Expectations

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Recent labour market statistics published by the Office of National Statistics shows that the UK job market remains in good health. It has shown another rise in the number of people in employment and only a modest increase in both the number of people unemployed and the economically inactive.

This is further supported by a recent BBC News Night report in which Paul Mason investigates the UK's reformed labour market and how well placed it is to weather an economic downturn. The report identified that 670,000 jobs remain unfilled, which is not surprising as we are looking at a countrywide average unemployment rate of 5.2%. The number of people in employment for the three months up until May 2008 was 29.59 million this, claims National Statistics on line is the highest figure since comparable records began in 1971.

Despite concerns around the local and global economy the recruitment industry continues to outperform all expectations. Recruitment companies are reporting strong bi annual results: Commenting on trading for the 2nd quarter of 2008, Alistair Cox, chief Executive of Hays plc, said "We had another strong quarter with 16% organic growth in Group net fees. Furthermore the international group's net fees delivered an outstanding performance, growing by 35% in the same quarter Robert Half reports that a shortage of experienced accounting and finance professionals continues to affect employers around the world. For the second consecutive year, more than half of the finance and human resources managers surveyed reported difficulty finding skilled job candidates. This was a persistent theme evident across all 20 counties surveyed.

The demand for high-level IT professionals is set to increase over the next decade according to the UR and Telcoms Insights 2008 Employment Forecast.

Antal International has seen a 65% year on year growth. A reason why we remain robust in this market is that we operate at the mid to senior level, or as we have trademarked the Rising Star level. Highly skilled talent at the mid to senior level is getting more difficult to find and companies find themselves operating within ‘a candidate driven' market. Ageing workforces, skills shortages and globalisation are just a few of the markets pressures making it difficult for companies to identify, recruit and retain the best talent. (Source Mercer Consulting) Key positions are open longer and hiring managers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the negative impact this has on their business. Decision makers lack the time and recruitment knowledge to find the right candidates, or more crucially, the people they need are not necessarily looking for them.

The award winning global group Antal International has launched 12 new franchised offices during the first 2 quarters of 2008 in the UK, but has also opened up new markets in Egypt, Philippines, Ghana and has significant plans to increase the number of offices in Germany and India. In 2007 almost 30% of our turnover was generated through shared business. Most of our franchisees are able to add 25% to their bottom line, just through interactively sharing candidates, clients and fees.
