He Turned A Nanny Job Into Firm With 46 Franchises

Friday, July 24, 2009

Joe Keeley, president and chief executive officer of College Nannies and Tutors, didn't expect a college "man-ny" job to eventually expand into 46 franchises in 20 states.

But it did. Now the 28-year-old entrepreneur finds himself at the flagship position of the largest legal employer of nannies in the country. And with $10 million in revenue this year, an anticipated $50 million in four years and plans to expand the Wayzata-based business into Canada and the United Kingdom, Keeley and his company seem to be only going up.

"When you"re a young entrepreneur you"re incredibly nimble, you don"t run out of energy, the cost of living is low, you don"t have a mortgage or kids. You have nowhere to go but up," Keeley said.

Keeley, who was in the entrepreneurship program at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, took a nanny job in 2000 for a family in Edina. But Keeley said he found himself being much more than a baby sitter during his time there "" he was a "role model" and recognized a need to provide working parents with a service that connects them with reliable guardians and tutors who would be active with their children.
