How did you end up at Great Harvest? My husband (Tim) and I were looking for a business to start, and he was driving down the road and saw that the bakery was for sale. It was like a God thing. ... I had said something like 10 years before, "Wouldn't it be cool to own a bakery?" Do you do most of the baking? Yes.
What time do you get here? It's usually about 10 o'clock at night, about 10 or 11.
And how long do you stay? Until my work is done. Usually 10 to 12. 11 is a good time to leave.
So you usually work more than 12 hours a day? Some days it's really long. But I actually really like it. Some people can work eight hours and be miserable, but I can work 12 and be happy.
How did you learn to bake? Well, my granny taught me a long time ago when I was little.
Do you have any stories to share? Well, the very first Thanksgiving we were open, we had a girl that was making the bread, and we were making a lot of stuffing bread. She forgot to put the salt in, which makes the yeast start to die. So after a while, we had dough oozing up all over the place.
Do you have any tips to share? Follow the directions.
Do you cook or bake at home? I do. We were off Labor Day weekend, and I made a couple of cakes, some cookies - which will probably end up being here - some bars. ... And I cook probably six nights out of the week, dinner.
What are your favorite things to cook? Italian foods - spaghetti, tortellini, lasagna, stuffed shells.
Is there anything else you want to add? Murphy points out her motto, painted on the back wall of the bakery: "Be loose and have fun. Bake phenomenal bread. Run fast to help customers and give generously to others" THE MURPHINO 2 to 3 Great Harvest focaccias 1 pound Italian sausage 1 pound chopped pepperoni 1 pepper - green, red or yellow 1/2 medium onion, chopped 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes 6 ounces shredded mozzarella Brown sausage; drain. Add onion, pepper and pepperoni. Cook until onion is tender. Add tomatoes. Cook 10 to 15 minutes until liquid is reduced. Add cheese. Stir.
Cut focaccia in half and split each half to form pockets. You can remove some of the bread from the middle of the focaccia.
Stuff meat mixture into focaccia. Bake 5 minutes at 350 degrees until the bread is warm.
This combination is our family's favorite, but feel free to experiment with olives, mushrooms, jalapeos or whatever else your family would enjoy.
