Today, brothers Mike and Tim Greene are managing partners of nine PODS franchises, including Orlando, which is celebrating 10 years of service to the community.
The pair first noticed the now familiar white and red PODS containers in Clearwater, Florida, where PODS is headquartered, and saw the opportunity as a natural progression from working with the family's mini storage business. Both remember their first delivery of a PODS container like it was yesterday.
"We delivered the PODS container just east of the St. Johns River where it was going to be used as a staging ground for archeologists recovering Indian remains that were discovered while a bridge was being expanded," Mike said. "Many of our future customers commented they noticed our billboard off Interstate 4, but it was actually our PODS container in the field." "What amazes us the most about PODS is the wide range of applications it can be used for, including local or long-distance moves, on-site home renovations, seasonal storage, an additional garage that is warehoused at one of our state of the art facilities, and even as a field storage unit for recovery or research," Tim said. "It truly makes some of life's challenges simpler. When we started in 1999 we were simply an alternative to mini storage and local truck rentals. Now, we can move people virtually anywhere in the continental U.S., Canada, Hawaii, and Australia. PODS Orlando has expanded over the years from its original 10,000 square-foot warehouse in Sanford, FL and now operates three separate warehouses with a 30,000 sq.-ft. facility in Longwood, FL, 65,000 sq.-ft. in Orlando, FL, and 27,000 sq.-ft. in Lakeland, FL. Currently the franchise has more than 2,000 containers available for local and long-distance moves and employs an average of 20-25 employees.
"The biggest change over the last 10 years has been the technology we use to help us in our day-to-day work," Tim said. "Software specifically-developed for PODS gives us real time data of when and where a PODS container was delivered, who delivered it, and online signatures of customers. In addition, GPS tracking increases overall efficiency." "Tim and I cannot believe where the time has gone," Mike said. "We remain motivated every day to bring our community the best moving and storage options available with PODS." The Greene's have established relationships with a variety of local and national charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, March of Dimes, Boy Scouts of America, local food banks, numerous churches, and schools throughout the Central Florida area.
Since the Greene's purchased the Orlando franchise, the PODS enterprise has grown from 4 locations to 154, and has expanded into Canada and Australia.
