Pollo Campero chicken comes fried or grilled, and you can be picky about whether you want light or dark meat. But they were out of grilled chicken the day I was there, so I went with just the fried. It was juicy, crisp with a bit of spice and an almost pastry-like crust. And it was about as non-greasy as fried chicken can get.
You get a few hot tortillas with it. If you want sides, black beans and rice and sweet plantains are the best choices. The signature Campero beans and rice were dry and bland. The tres leches cake sounded tempting, but they were out of that, too.
But Pollo Campero is all about chicken. And this fast-food franchise appears to be a great addition. Hopefully, there will be more coming to Minnesota in the near future.
Pollo Campero, 1572 S. Robert St., West St. Paul; 651-306-2091. Open for lunch and dinner daily. Prices, $1.89 to $31.99.
