But when her caregiver had to be away for three months, McLain turned to Right at Home of Pasadena, an in-home care service franchise, owned by Diane Fortner and her husband Bob Hingston.
Right at Home provides trained, insured and bonded caregivers for a variety of home care and home health care needs. The service was a godsend for McLain, 87, who lives in the Villa Gardens retirement community in Pasadena.
"I was unable to get out much and they supplied me with excellent caregivers," McLain said. "I used them for several months. Right at Home provided all the help I needed, and I'd be happy to have any of them back again." Fortner and her husband launched their Right at Home franchise in July 2007. They live in La Crescenta and run their business from an office at 1785 Locust St., Suite 3, in Pasadena.
"I had been working in the insurance industry," Fortner said. "I used to work a lot less hours to make about the same amount of money ... but can I say that I felt rewarded for writing an insurance policy?" These days Fortner says she gets plenty of satisfaction from working with the franchise's 65 clients.
"I'll wake up some nights worrying about something, but then the next day I'll get a thank you from a client or a client's family - that can make all the difference," Advertisement she said. "We always think about which caregiver will work best for someone." After an initial meeting with a client, Right at Home develops a custom care plan that's tailored to the client's specific needs. Detailed recommendations are then made on what kind of services would best benefit them.
The service features a proprietary system of matching caregivers to clients. That's done by taking a number of factors into consideration, including care services needed, client interests and the personalities of both the client and caregiver.
The Pasadena Right at Home franchise services several local communities, including Pasadena, South Pasadena, Altadena, San Marino, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Sierra Madre and Arcadia, among others.
Right at Home's caregivers provide clients with everything from transportation to medical appointments, cooking and light housekeeping to coordination of the healthy meal plan and development of a light exercise schedule.
Fortner is one of the most successful franchisees in the entire Right at Home franchise system, ranking among the top 15 percent.
A leading international provider of in-home companion and personal care to seniors and others, Omaha, Neb.-based Right at Home reported continued growth in 2010 with record system-wide revenue that topped $173 million, a 27 percent increase over the previous year.
"With more than 200 U.S. offices across 40 states, conservative projections are that this year we will collectively serve more than 25,000 clients, which indicates the tremendous need for high-quality, professional in-home senior care services across the nation and across the world," company Chairman and CEO Allen Hager said in a statement.
