The Franchise Business Review, a national market firm that conducts independent research on the franchise industry, spotlighted this thriving sector in a special report on child service franchises.
While the recession pummeled some educational franchise systems, school budget cuts at the same time created amazing growth opportunities, FBR said. As schools cut funding for extracurricular programs, parents began looking for alternatives to enrich their children's time after school.
"It makes sense that Computer Explorers' programs would be attractive to after-school, summer camp and rec center programs," said Deb Evans, Computer Explorers CEO. "Recession or not, parents want to give their children an edge and spending on programs like our TechStars, LEGO robotics and video game design help kids extend the range of learning." Computer Explorers offers a range of parent opt-in classes that its franchisees market to after school, summer school and rec center programs. Because parents pay individual tuition to enroll their children, these programs don't cost the school or rec center anything, making them easy to launch and popular.
"Parents are spending more on kids today," said Evans. "With the job market tight, they are willing to splurge to give the kids something extra that gives them an advantage. Students get excited and don't realize they've added hours of math and science classroom time because they have fun in the process." Child services businesses such as Computer Explorers are growing because they can be run from a home office, have flexible hours and low overhead costs, according to the FBR report.
"We have a great business model," Evans said. "Computer Explorers is not only an attractive, low-investment franchise, it really makes a difference in the lives of the children it touches. For many people looking for a career change, doing something important is a big driver and on that point we deliver."
