Conveniently located at 284 Old Deal Road, just past the Monmouth SPCA and near the intersection of Wall Street and Route 35, the Perlas' state-of-the-art digs for dogs has amenities guaranteed to keep tails wagging. The 8,000-square-foot Camp has three large, climate-controlled indoor play areas with adjoining outside yards, where Campers can roam inside or out at will. Outside, the play yards are equipped with shade canopies, play equipment and special bone-shaped puppy pools to keep Campers comfortable, even on the hottest dog-day afternoons. "Dogs, just like humans, are social animals," said Laurie; "they love being around other dogs and people. As a whole, they're much happier in a group situation than being cooped up in the house all day. Camp Bow Wow's all-day open play philosophy gives them the opportunity to make decisions for themselves: whether to play or rest. It's much healthier for the pups than sitting home alone." Interested guardians can check in on the antics in the play yard by logging on to the Camp Bow Wow Eatontown website or their Camp Bow Wow iPhone app to watch real-time footage broadcast by one of the many Camper Cams installed around the Camp. Camp Bow Wow Eatontown also has a special play area for pint-sized pups, to providing a place where extra-small dogs can run with a pack that's just their size. Canine Campers check in daily in the Camp-style lobby, where the Camp store features a selection of the latest "must-have" doggy toys and accessories. Grooming services will also be available on the premises. Camp Bow Wow Eatontown will offer full- and half-day play options in addition to overnight boarding. The Perlas are working with the Monmouth County SPCA by fostering homeless pets for adoption and having the pups from the shelter over for some fun in the play yards.
"The safety of every dog entrusted to our care is our first priority," added Fred Perla. "That's one of the reasons a complimentary Interview Day is so important. Every dog is a unique individual with unique needs. Most are ready to join the pack in the play yard, while others are more timid and get stressed in new situations. The Interview Day gives us an opportunity to observe how each pup reacts to the Camp environment, and gives each pup the opportunity to get to know the Counselors and other Campers at his/her own pace." A staff of Certified Camp Counselors, trained in pet CPR, first aid, dog behavior, group play dynamics, safety and health management, supervises Campers at all times. There is at least one Counselor for every 15 Campers during playtimes.
After a full day of play, Day Campers head home for the evening, tired, happy and ready to relax. Overnight Campers retire to one of the Camp's 50 spacious, private, climate-controlled cabins for dinner and rest. All cabins, furnished with comfy cots and fluffy blankets, are large enough to accommodate several dogs from the same family if their guardian would like them to stay together. The pups also enjoy a special Campfire Treat before bedtime. To avoid upset stomachs, guardians of overnight Campers are encouraged to bring their pup's food from home. Camp fees are all-inclusive.
To further ensure the safety and security of all Campers, new arrivals are required to participate in a free Interview Day before they can attend Camp on a regular basis. Canine Campers must be on a flea and tick preventative, be at least four months old, be spayed or neutered if six months or older, be up-to-date on their rabies and distemper vaccinations, have had a bordetella (canine cough) vaccination within the last six months, and be in good general health.
The Perlas are dog lovers from way back, and have spent many hours volunteering at local shelters and fostering dogs in their home. After one of their sons found Camp Bow Wow on the Internet, the family visited a Camp nearby, deciding then and there that Camp Bow Wow would provide them with the opportunity to blend their passion for animals with a career. "When you work at something you love," said Laurie, "you never feel like you're going to work."
