September is National Hunger Action Month. Comfort Keepers, a nationwide franchise of in-home care services for seniors and other adults, has decided to use that designation as a springboard for making sure all senior citizens are well fed.
"It's reported that 35 to 80 percent of seniors are at risk of being undernourished or malnourished," said Ann Fannan, owner of the Glassboro/Pitman franchise. "We find that even when they're being cared for by their loved ones, they can still be undernourished." Comfort Keepers has partnered with the South Jersey Food Bank to collect and distribute food throughout the county during the month of September.
The organization has placed food collection bins at Senior Care in Washington Township, Post House Senior Living in Glassboro and Woodbury Mews in Woodbury.
The nationwide campaign, titled STOP Senior Hunger, aims at creating awareness for the importance of a healthy diet among those aged 65 and older.
"Sometimes, it just means getting the family involved," Fannan said. "And sometimes we go out and purchase food." Food will be collected at the three locations in September and donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey, which will distribute it accordingly to Gloucester County residents and food pantries that serve a senior population.
