Service Brands International Announces Leadership Changes For Mr. Handyman, Protect Painters

Monday, October 03, 2011

Service Brands International (SBI), a privately held, multi-concept franchisor of home-service brands, announced leadership changes involving two of its franchise systems, Mr. Handyman and ProTect Painters. Other brands in the SBI portfolio include Molly Maid and 1-800-Dry-Clean, which are not affected by the announcements. The changes were prompted by the resignation of Todd Recknagel, who joined SBI as the CEO and President of Mr. Handyman International in early 2003. Under Recknagel's direction, Mr. Handyman increased its consumer sales more than 200 percent, and is now the largest employer of handymen in the world. Recknagel will remain in an advisory position and partner at Mr. Handyman to stay involved with high-level strategic direction of the company.

"I can't begin to express how wonderful it has been to have spent these years building the Mr. Handyman brand and being an integral part of the growth of the franchise," said Recknagel, noting that he will be moving on to pursue other career opportunities. "I truly feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to work with such a dedicated and talented group of people, including the SBI management team, our franchise partners and all of the wonderful corporate employees who together contributed to Mr. Handyman's success during my tenure as CEO and President." Taking on the role of Mr. Handyman President is Alex Roberts, who most recently served as President of ProTect Painters. Roberts has been with SBI for seven years in a variety of capacities, including Vice President of Franchise Development, where he led a four-brand sales team to build their footprint in the home services industries. Roberts also spent three years selling Mr. Handyman franchises during the company's highest growth years. Before joining SBI, he spent 12 years recruiting athletes and coaching the USA U-18 hockey team, drawing parallels between successful leadership of sports teams and building a franchise brand.

Meanwhile, SBI has appointed a dual leadership team to run ProTect Painters, including Chris Ring as Vice President of Operations and Training and Anne Nemer as Vice President of Marketing and Development. Ring, who has been with ProTect Painters since 2009, offers 17 years of industry experience, including regional and district sales management with the Sherwin Williams Paint Company, as well as operating his own painting business. Nemer, who has been with SBI for seven years, brings more than 10 years of franchise field marketing and brand building to the table, including driving marketing initiatives for Mr. Handyman. Her innovative marketing skills contributed to doubling the brand's awareness and increasing the number of franchise units by 90 percent.

"We wish Todd well in his future endeavors and look forward to having him continue to provide input toward Mr. Handyman's strategic direction through his advisory role," said David McKinnon, CEO, Chairman and Co-Founder of SBI. "Meanwhile, we know that Alex's deep understanding of franchising, coupled with his team-building and motivational skills, will continue the growth momentum of Mr. Handyman. In addition, the unique talents and skill sets offered by Anne Nemer and Chris Ring are the perfect synergy to support our ProTect Painters franchise partners and grow the brand into the future."
