Tim Hortons Eyes Military Bases For Middle Eastern Growth

Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Tim Hortons will likely seek out military bases as part of its plan to open 120 new units in the Middle East.

According to Arabian Business, the company would only open on bases where there is a Canadian military presence.

Canada opened a military base in Kuwait in September.

Tim Hortons first opened in the region in the fall with a unit in Dubai. It was the company's first restaurant outside of North America, where it operates more than 3,600 stores.

The company will open four outlets in the UAE this week, with local franchisee Apparel Group, before spanning out across the region.

The UAE is home to an estimated 27,000 Canadian expatriates and the Gulf state is Canada's largest trade partner in the Middle East and North Africa.

From the story: "This is our first real international market and we will be focused on this for the next 24 months. We are focused on making sure our partner is successful," said David Clanachan, COO of Tim Hortons, US and International operations. "We have opened the first five stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We have sites under construction in Sharjah, Fujairah City Centre, in Muscat, Oman and in Qatar."
