The honor ranks Weed Man in the top 10 percent of all franchises nationwide, and recognizes the company for demonstrating best practices in recruiting military members as franchisees. Calculated through a comprehensive survey of more than 4,000 franchises, the survey analyzed the following key areas in each franchise system: the number and percent of veteran-owned franchises; programs and policies in place that measure a franchise's non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military veterans; and a franchise's financial efforts to recruit and retain military veterans.
"It is our goal to support our nation's heroes by providing them with a business opportunity that has a low overall investment, but enables them to be financially successful," said Jennifer Lemcke, COO of Turf Holdings, Inc. and Weed Man USA. "Franchising is a great avenue for veterans to turn to as it offers an established business model and a support system that will help them achieve long term growth goals." As part of the company's incentives for veterans, Weed Man offers a 25 percent discount off the franchise fee. The initiative is in support of the Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran), a voluntary effort of International Franchise Association (IFA) member-companies to provide franchise business opportunities to honorably discharged veterans transitioning to civilian life or seeking a career change.
"When my service came to a conclusion, I really didn't know what to do next, and started looking into possible business opportunities as a solution," said Jeff McCorry, former Sergeant of the Army Special forces and owner of Weed Man in Ocean County, NJ, which opened in Spring 2011. "Military skills are easily transferable to the business world, so I knew that with the right opportunity, I would be able to jump start what could be a successful career. The veteran support provided by Weed Man is second to none and I was really impressed by the company's initiatives and programs. My business became profitable right away and Weed Man offers a variety of outlets that allow me to give back to fellow veterans and continue doing something that benefits the community." For the past six years, Weed Man has been partnering with Project EverGreen, a nationwide non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and enhance green spaces in our communities for today and future generations. Weed Man participates in the organization's GreenCare for Troops program. As part of the initiative, Weed Man franchise owners across the country provide free lawn care for military families. Currently, more than 15,000 families are registered with the GreenCare for Troops program.
"When our nation's troops are away on duty, their families often find it difficult to keep up with things like lawn care," Cindy Code, Executive Director for Project EverGreen said. "Our Project EverGreen volunteers provide a solution for them, making a huge difference in these families' lives throughout their communities as well as creating healthy lawns and green spaces for families to enjoy." There are more than 265 Weed Man territories across the nation providing environmentally responsible fertilization, weed control and integrated pest management services, and the company is expanding rapidly. The company has a strong focus on franchise development with a centralized focus to reach growth goals. Weed Man is currently focusing development efforts across the entire United States and is confident that they will achieve these goals.
