New Business Profile: Planet Fitness Opens In Holland Township

What's it called and where is it? Planet Fitness is located at 12330 James St., near the Star Theater.

What does it do? The business, the largest new tenant of the Holland Town Center, offers membership access to its exercise facility, which includes 82 cardio workout machines besides weight training devices.

The national Planet Fitness franchise chain has a big presence on the east side of the state, with 17 locations in the greater Detroit area, said Holland general manager R.J. Lewis. But the Holland location is the first in West Michigan.

The franchise markets itself as a non-intimidating place to work out.

"What we have here is what we call our "�judgment-free zone'" Lewis said. "The whole gym is our "�judgment-free zone.'" What do they say about it? "We have a wide variety of fitness levels ... I just signed up a couple of members the other day that are 83 years old," Lewis said. "Everybody fits in right where they need to be." Why here, why now? The economy has made the time ripe for low-cost fitness gyms, Lewis said.

While gym memberships are among the first items to be cut from most people's budgets, still, "the big thing is, everybody wants to be fit," Lewis said. Memberships at Planet Fitness start at $10 a month.

When is it open? Planet Fitness is open 24 hours a day from 12 a.m. Monday morning to 9 p.m. Friday night. It's also open on the weekends, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
