Children's Lighthouse expanding in the region

South Charlotte residents have a new option for childcare this month with the opening of the third Children's Lighthouse Learning Center.

The owner, Iyore Ojomo, opened her first childcare center in Matthews in 2007 after failing to find the kind of care she wanted for her child.

Ojomo is a native of Nigeria. She said her mother, who worked for the Nigerian department of education for 37 years, made sure all of her nine children attended college.

Of Ojomo's siblings, four are doctors, one is an attorney and two are accountants.

Growing up in a third world country, "the only consistent thing is change," Ojomo said. "My mother felt like education was something that could never be taken from you." Ojomo studied business administration and worked as an administrator for a group of doctors after moving to Charlotte in 2000. She took an extended leave after her son was born and began looking into childcare centers when she wanted to return to work.

"I wanted a Bible-based curriculum, and no schools in this area offered it," she said.

She began researching, and discovered that Children's Lighthouse Learning Center offered the A Beka Bible-based curriculum she wanted. Before she knew it, she was visiting Children's Lighthouse in Texas and opening her own center in Matthews.

The center grew quickly, and Ojomo soon opened another one in Indian Trail.

"I know there's a demand for the type of program I'm offering," she said. "It gets the kids ready for school academically and socially." Her first two Children's Lighthouse centers enroll more than 230 children each. Thirty-seven families came to a recent open house at the newest center on Rea Road in Waxhaw just south of Blakeney.

The new center is slated to open this week, and it still has openings, Ojomo said.

Ojomo said she has enjoyed working with children, and she fondly recalls a time when she lost her voice and children at the centers were asking her for days afterward if she was better.

"It's like you don't have three kids," she said. "It's like you have 400 and something kids." While the youngest of Ojomo's three sons will join his brothers at Marvin Elementary in the fall, she will stay immersed in childcare for the younger set. Her next expansion, she said, likely will be into the Fort Mill area.
