Lumberjacks Coming To Yuba City

Thursday, July 05, 2007

Lyon's restaurant on Colusa Avenue will make way for a new eatery owned by a Redding restaurateur.

Jeff Garrett, owner of a Lumberjacks restaurant in Redding, said he's opening his second Lumberjacks, this time in Yuba City, at 1025 Colusa Ave.

"It's family style," said Garrett, describing the Lumberjacks. "It's like an upscale coffee shop." Garrett said the growing city is the right place for his Lumberjacks.

"It's a great location," said Garrett. "All around it's a perfect fit." Construction started Monday, including a new sign with the new restaurant's name and logo that will remain under wraps for now, said Garrett, to avoid enticing passing motorists before the restaurant is open.

Once doors open around Aug. 10, Lumberjacks visitors will find a restaurant that serves up generous portions of American-style fare, including soups, sandwiches, hamburgers and steaks.

"I think for my style of restaurant, it's the best," said Garrett. "It's big portions, good food at a reasonable price." A long list of work is planned to remake the 4,158-square-foot Lyon's into a Lumberjacks, including new dual-pane windows with grids, rock finish and log siding on the building, interior painting, new lighting, bathroom fixtures, and booths, tables and chairs.

Plans to tear out the Lyon's have been in place since May 17 when Yuba City issued a building permit for demolition work on the interior and exterior.

"It's a complete remodel," said Garrett. "It'll look totally different from what it looks like now." Lumberjacks will seat 150 customers, and employ from 50 to 60 people. The building will be leased from Steadfast Yuba City I LLC, the Newport Beach-based owners of the Yuba Sutter Mall property.

Lyon's will be missed by some customers including, Vickie Bullard, 52, of Marysville, who ate there nearly every day. She said we would be "disappointed" by the restaurant's closure because it's "like family." "It's not really the food, it's the people," said Bullard, in May before Lyon's closed. "You come here, it's an extended family." A sign in the former Lyon's window thanked customers for their patronage and hoped they would return once the restaurant reopened.

The Colusa Avenue Lyon's opened in January 1985.

Garrett started his first Lumberjacks restaurant in a similar fashion three years ago by buying out a Lyon's.

Yuba City's Lumberjacks will be the fourth restaurant owned by Garrett, 40, who was recognized as Shasta County's restaurateur of the year in February by the local chapter of the California Restaurant Association.

Garrett said he has launched 20 restaurants during his career and looks to start up more Lumberjacks in the Sacramento area once the Yuba City location gets off the ground.
