Comfy Cow To Open First Franchise Location This Spring In New Albany

Saturday, February 15, 2014

With snow on the ground and more in the forecast, not many people are thinking of ice cream. But Ian Hall and Lincoln Ogden are.

The two plan to open the first franchise of Louisville's Comfy Cow ice cream shop in an 1874 Italianate building in downtown New Albany by the end of April.

"The first time I walked into a Comfy Cow I told my wife jokingly, "If they ever franchise this place sign me up," " Hall said. "When I came down here just to walk through the building when it was for sale I thought "" this is a Comfy Cow." Hall and Ogden approached Tim and Roy Koons-McGee, founders and owners of Comfy Cow, about opening a franchise. "They had been searching for their first franchise location and had been turning people down," Hall said. "Then they saw this space." The original pressed-tin ceiling, along with original hardwood floors and wainscoting, were intact, along with the original facade. "It's a look the Comfy Cow has always gone for," said Tim Koons-McGee. "We"ve always tried to make it feel like it's been there forever. Almost everything we use is secondhand junk. It's not high end. They won"t have to retrofit anything. It's the perfect spot.

"We"d been looking for the right people for our first franchise," he said. "That opportunity presented itself and it was perfect. They"re great guys. Ian's a wonderful restaurateur and Lincoln is really talented. He's adding elements that make it pretty cool." Ogden's general contracting business, Compass Project Management, is renovating the two-story building near State and East Market streets in the heart of downtown.

"I was looking at a deli or throwback ice cream parlor," said Ogden, who owns the building. "I wanted to own the building, but I really wanted to be involved in the business." Enter Hall, owner of The Exchange Pub + Kitchen just a couple of blocks from the new store.

The two share an interest in construction and renovating historic buildings, which Hall did when moving his restaurant into a historic building on Main Street in 2012.
