Seniors Helping Seniors, One Prize At A Time

Seniors helping seniors is the name of the game. Well, actually the game is the always popular "Bingo".

At the Tyler Senior Center, there are a couple members who make it possible. Desiring to get more involved in the community, Jim and June Stephens regularly participate in the senior center activities. However, they wanted to help a little more. So the duo spends time and money coordinating additional events for those who want some more time with different games. Jim Stephens said, "Being a senior citizen I know what most senior citizens like and what they like to do. I know what I like to do, and so I try to do something that would be both enjoyable to me and to them". While the center offers many activities at all hours of the day, the Stephen family volunteers their time and prizes, for an extra game of bingo every month. June Stephens said, "We just thought why can't we have two? Why can't we do it more than once? So it just gave the people there another time to play".

The prizes range from useful household objects to gift cards. June said, "I like to find things that maybe they might need and then things that are just fun things that you wouldn't just go out and buy for yourself". Seniors even plan their days around the event. The Tyler Senior Center Director said, "They are able to change their doctor's appointment,. and when they're making their life around bingo it's pretty large".

So grab your board and marker, it's almost time for Bingo.

When: First and third Tuesday of every month, 1:30-2:30 P.M.
