Which Wich sandwich franchise opened its first Metro Detroit restaurant last week in Grosse Pointe.
Not just another sub chain, Which Wich offers a whopping 50 sandwiches, each highly customizable. It was created by Michigan State University graduate Jeff Senelli, who grew up in Metro Detroit and launched the brand in 2003 in Texas. Business partners Mike Berschback and Nabil Shurafa brought the franchise to Grosse Pointe.
"I tried the one in Petoskey and immediately called (Shurafa) from the parking lot and told him it's such a great concept and was such great food," says Berschback, who has a culinary background, while his partner is in finance.
Berschback says the Grosse Pointe Which Wich, 17045 Kercheval, sold 115 milkshakes on its first day, last Wednesday. The shop also sells house-made chips, and each sandwich can also be ordered as a lettuce wrap or salad. Twenty percent of the menu is vegetarian with some vegan options.
There's also a charity spin. Order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for $3, and Which Wich will donate a PB & J. to an after-school tutoring program in Detroit.
Which Wich will be one of two dozen businesses participating in Grosse Pointe Restaurant Week, May 2-9. Deals vary by restaurant; Which Wich is offering lunch for two for $14.
