Domino's Pizza Owner Plans 4,000 Mile Bike Ride For Charity

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

The owner of nine Domino's Pizza locations throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties plans to ride his bike across the country to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital starting Thursday.

Seth Gollhardt of Lehman Twp. plans to travel about 4,000 miles from Wildwood, N.J., to Seaside, Ore. He will bike through Northeast Pennsylvania May 8 to 15.

He is trying to raise more than $100,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. During the ride, he will celebrate two milestones: his 50th birthday in June and his 30th year with Domino's Pizza.

He began cycling seriously about six years ago and found it was something he loved to do, he said. It helped him lose weight and manage his diabetes.

"I'm riding to save my life because it has really improved my health," he said. "I thought it would be nice to do something to give back to the community, especially during these milestone years for me." Mr. Gollhardt owns two Domino's Pizza locations in Scranton as well as in Old Forge, the Peckville section of Blakely, Clarks Summit, Old Forge, Pittston, Kingston, Wilkes-Barre and Dallas.

He started his career at Domino's Pizza as a delivery driver while going to school in St. Louis. He worked his way up to management, owned his first Domino's in Chicago in 1986, and came to Northeast Pennsylvania in 1987.

On May 8, his Domino's stores in Lackawanna and Luzerne will sell medium pizzas for $3.99 from 4 to 8 p.m.; $1 from each pizza will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Donations also may be made on the website www.sethsride.com and he will do fundraisers for St. Jude at Domino's locations throughout the country during the ride.

St. Jude Children's Hospital was founded in 1962 by Danny Thomas. The hospital does research and patient care and shares research with other hospitals. Treatments invented at St. Jude helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent.

The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.9 million, which is primarily covered by individual contributions. Mr. Gollhardt said Domino's supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital each year with a fundraiser.

"We have a lot of familiarity with St. Jude and we think it's a great organization to support," he said.
