Owners Mindy and John Ratcliff moved to Round Rock from San Antonio last year for John's job with Austin Diagnostic Clinic. Mindy became interested in the Salons by JC franchise when still in San Antonio, and noticed there were none in the north Austin area.
"We've always wanted to own our own business and we've moved cities a couple of different times," Ratcliff said. "We lived in the area from 1998 to 2000 and wanted to be here again." Ratcliff said the unique business model and the way Salons by JC treated its stylists are two other reasons she decided to be a franchisee.
"Working with a franchise is easier," Ratcliff said. "You don't have to recreate the wheel so to speak. You have the support of the company to assist you." Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller founded Salons by JC in 1998. There are 16 locations in Texas and Alabama that offer beauty and wellness services. Salons by JC offer a salon-suite business model. The franchise leases private suites to independent beauty professionals who rent a suite within the Salons by JC building, but are able to manage their own business.
The Round Rock salon will be include 8,000 total square-feet, with 43 suites including mirrors, shampoo bowls, chairs, cabinets for towels, hood dryers and roll carts for other tools and supplies. The average suite size is 10 feet by 10 feet. Beauty and wellness services include hair styling, hair coloring, hair weaving, massage, nail care and cosmetics.
"It's an opportunity for stylists to own their businesses without the troubles of a full-service salon," Ratcliff said. "A lot of these folks are ready to do their own thing, but may not have the capital or courage to open a huge salon." Ratcliff said she admires Salons by JC's business model because it allows the stylists to have their own salon name within the Salon by JC's name, operate their business and set their own hours.
Ratcliff said she takes care of the maintenance and will provide a salon manager so the stylists can solely focus on their clients and their craft. Within the next two weeks 16 stylists will be moving into 11 of the 43 suites.
Ratcliff joined the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and will have a ribbon-cutting event on June 25 at 4 p.m. There will be food, drinks and a raffle drawing.
"I think there's a lot of good business networking with the chamber," Ratcliff said, "and having not been a member very long it's good to get out there and know who the business leaders are in the community." Ratcliff said it is strong business leaders who ensure Round Rock continues to thrive as a community. She said she hopes staying an active member of the chamber will help her become more knowledgeable about the area.
Ratcliff plans to open two more Salons by JC in the north Austin area to serve those in Austin, Cedar Park and Pflugerville. Another Salons by JC franchisee owner operates in south Austin at Parkside Pavilion.
"As an owner we want to be the people the stylists want to work for," Ratcliff said. "Not only is it our job as a salon owner to make sure the place is fantastic and beautiful to work for, but we want to make sure those clients are coming in feeling the same way."
