Medichair Home Medical Equipment ( Peterborough) Hosts Fundraiser For Ten Thousand Villages And Hospice Peterborough

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Local entrepreneurs Allison and Ron Seiderer are donating 150 sq. ft. of their store space to support Ten Thousand Villages and its global practice of providing fair pay and support to artisans for hand-crafted products. 10% of everything sold will also be donated to Hospice Peterborough

"We were deeply touched by the stories from Ten Thousand Villages," says Allison Seiderer, co-owner along with husband Ron of MEDIchair Home Medical Equipment (Peterborough). "Stories like the Zooties collection that has created permanent employment for at least 20 women in the cooperative in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. Many women in Kyrgyzstan don't see viable options for themselves in that country because of lack of work and look to immigrate to nearby countries like Russia, Turkey, and USE (United Arab Emirates) for work. A portion of the women who immigrate become missing persons and it is widely speculated that they are sold into prostitution or human slavery. Zooties, albeit in a small way, are helping to prevent that by presenting local opportunities for employment to women in rural areas of Kyrgyzstan." "When we heard stories like that, we just had to help "" and hopefully make a difference in the process," explains Allison. "So, Ron and I decided to open 150 square feet of our showroom to Ten Thousand Villages for their annual Christmas gift sale from Monday-Friday 9:00 AM "" 5:00 PM. The fundraising Boutique will feature many handcrafted, unique Christmas ornaments and nativities as well as Fair Trade food items and popular giftware items." Adds Seiderer, "With such a powerful Fair Trade stance these are gifts that give twice: your loved one will receive a very special gift as will the community in another country where the artisans live. What could embody the Christmas spirit better then caring for our global community?" MEDIchair Home Medical Equipment's Christmas Fundraiser for Ten Thousand Villages takes place at 329 McDonnel Street, Peterborough. Store hours for the Fundraising Boutique are Monday""Friday from 9 AM-5 PM, About Ten Thousand Villages: Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit program of Mennonite Central Committee Canada, one of the country's largest international relief and development agencies. The organization deliberately marries the concept of fair trade with healthy and environmentally sustainable business practices. From store operations to product sourcing to marketing practices, Ten Thousand Villages strives to meet the "triple bottom line" of economic, environmental and social sustainability.

Founded in 1946, Ten Thousand Villages has grown from the trunk of founder Edna Ruth Byler's car to a network of more than 120 retail outlets and 150 festival sales throughout North America. Ten Thousand Villages is an exceptional source for unique handmade gifts, jewellery, home decor, art and sculpture and personal accessories made by artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. One of the world's largest fair trade organizations and a founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization, Ten Thousand Villages strives to improve the livelihood of tens of thousands of disadvantaged artisans in 35 countries. Product sales help pay for food, education, healthcare and housing for artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. www.tenthousandvillages.ca About Hospice Peterborough Since 1988, Hospice Peterborough has provided hospice palliative care outreach and support services to those living in Peterborough City and County.

Hospice Peterborough, along with our community partners at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) Palliative Care Unit, case managers from the Central East Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), palliative care physicians and community nurses, have long recognized the gap in service for people living with life-threatening illnesses. To address these concerns, we have been working diligently towards expanding our community programming and establishing a 10 bed hospice care centre.

Last year our referrals increased by 22% and it became apparent that we can no longer continue to expand to meet our community's needs at our current location. At the same time, we know it is time to move ahead with our plans to build a client-centred facility. In response to this unprecedented growth, we purchased a property at 325 London Street at Reid. This location will be transformed into our Hospice Peterborough Care Centre.

At a symbolic level a hospice is a home, a place of safe refuge; at a functional level it is a home, a care facility, a community meeting space, and a workplace. Hospice Peterborough counts on the generous support of our donors to help run our existing programs. Building and operating the hospice care centre will require enthusiastic community support to enable us to continue our current programs while making the dream of a hospice care centre a reality for our community.

We support the city and county of Peterborough including all its townships of: Asphodel-Norwood, Cavan Monaghan, Douro Dummer, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Selwyn Lakefield, Trent Lakes. No Professional referrals are required for community programs. If you or someone you know might benefit from our services, we are a phone call away and a trained volunteer will refer you to the appropriate staff member.

As a Board Member of Hospice Peterborough Allison knows first-hand the how crucial palliative and grief care are to our community.

Funds raised through events like the Ten Thousand Villages fundraiser help Hospice Peterborough provide over 25 programs and services at no cost to our clients and their families. Thank you to Ron and Allison Seiderer for supporting our local and global communities.
