Pirtek signs first South Florida franchise, seeking more dealers

Pirtek has signed its first franchise agreement in South Florida for a hydraulic hose replacement business and hopes to establish three more.

Founded 30 years ago in Australia, Pirtek expanded to the United States 15 years ago and now has 52 locations here. Overall, it has over 400 locations in 23 countries. The company makes hydraulic hoses for many kinds of machinery, from construction vehicles to manufacturing equipment to boats. VP of franchise development Gwyn O"�Kane said it specializes in making hoses that can"�t be found at retail stores or online.

Pirtek sends vans to customers at any time with a technician to make a new hose so its customers"� machinery can get back to work on the spot, said O"�Kane, who works out of its U.S. headquarters in Rockledge.

"You can"�t buy this stuff online," O"�Kane said. "There's competition around town but few have mobile service." O"�Kane said Pirtek signed a franchise in Miami that should open on Oct. 12. He declined to reveal the buyer. The company would like to add three more franchises in South Florida. It likes to open a franchise for every 500,000 residents, he added.

Each Pirtek franchise has a 3,000- to 4,000-square-foot industrial location. They start with three vans and five employees.

O"�Kane said it costs around $400,000 to open a turnkey Pirtek franchise, including the $50,000 franchise fee. The parent company provides training, marketing and operational support, including tablets for the mobile technicians to take orders.

"As people are demanding more building, infrastructure and roads there is more demand," O"�Kane said.
