Rita's Italian Ice suspends sale of Frozen Custard due to egg shortage

Wednesday, July 08, 2015

A popular Italian ice chain is pulling their their Frozen Custard from the menu due to a nation-wide egg shortage.

Rita's Italian Ices announced on their website that they'll be substituting their custard with 'Rita's premium' soft-serve ice cream. The signature vanilla, chocolate, and twist flavors will be offered in Blendinis, Mistos, Gelatis, cups, and cones alike.

The company says it hasn't been able to get a hold of enough safe eggs to continue production following an outbreak of avian flu affected the country's egg-laying hens.

Rita's posted a statement to their website saying, "there is a slight difference in taste and texture. The egg in our Frozen Custard provides a rich, creamy flavor and texture - that's what makes our product so unique! That being said, our soft-serve ice cream comes pretty darn close!" Once Rita's obtains a safe batch of eggs, custard enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the "cool treats" again.
