Aire Serv Educates New Homeowners on the Basic Mechanics In and Around the Home

Buying a new house can be an exciting but overwhelming experience, especially for first-time homeowners who no longer have landlords managing the maintenance of their home. HVAC filter? Furnace? These terms are all too familiar to experienced homeowners, but to everyone else, it's a part of their home that they've never had to clean, repair or replace. Before these first-timers panic, Aire Serv, a global company providing installation, maintenance and repair of air quality systems, has provided a few hidden gem maintenance tips they can utilize to save them money (and a headache) down the road:

* Even skinny gaps are too fat. Most homeowners know to seal their doors and windows with caulk to prevent leaks and drafts, but you can also lose a lot of the air or heat circulating throughout your house by not sealing attic hatches, wiring holes, plumbing vents, recessed light and furnace flues.
* Ensure recessed lights make friends with insulation. If lights aren't labeled ICAT (insulation contact air tight), you're losing heat. Add an airtight baffle for a quick fix.
* Don't forget about the "middle men". Everyone knows to keep the front and back doors of the house closed, but homeowners should leave all doors INSIDE their home open (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) to increase air circulation throughout the house.

It's also important to remember the basics:

* Freshen your HVAC filters once a month. A clogged filter can slow down air flow and waste energy by making your heating and cooling systems work harder, which ultimately costs you money.
* Install a programmable thermostat, which allows you to schedule automatic increases and decreases in your home's temperature, based on your away-from-home schedule. Each degree saves you more money, making this an easy and cost-effective tip.
* Make sure all vents are open for business. Covered or blocked vents can make your heating and cooling systems work overtime.
