A Monticello developer is looking to bounce into a growing trend by creating an indoor trampoline center at a shopping plaza on North Galleria Drive. Ashish Patel, of Sky Limit Realty in Monticello, has submitted plans to the Town of Wallkill Planning Board to renovate a vacant section of a building at the Plaza at Crystal Run that now houses a Petco, an Off-Track Betting and a gym called Ultimate Advantage. Several storefronts in the building are vacant.
Patel is looking to add 15,000 square feet to the building by raising the roof 14 feet in a now-vacant section next to Petco, according to plans. The addition of a third story would let the building accommodate the extra space needed for the trampoline center.
Patel said Wednesday if the Planning Board approves his plans for the trampoline center, he wants to buy the whole plaza, which includes Pier 1 Imports. The plaza was sold for $4.1 million in 2014 to MidCrystal Holdings LLC. Patel said he's working to get the company Bounce! Trampoline Sports, a franchise of trampoline centers, into the vacant space. "I think it's a new trend with young people," Patel said. The franchise already has a space in the Town of Poughkeepsie, Patel said, as well as facilities in Valley Cottage in Rockland County, Syosset in Long Island and in Naples, Fla. And other franchises have been popping up across the country. There's even an International Association of Trampoline Parks that sets industry standards and holds conferences.
According to its website, the Bounce! Trampoline Sports facility in Poughkeepsie has five "jumping courts" of various sizes, a zone for smaller children and a "ninja obstacle course." The facility also has trampoline dodgeball, slam dunk basketball and foam pits.
Patel said although there are activities for kids, trampoline parks are for those of all ages. "We've been trying to get something in this area for a while," he said.
