SBARRO RANKED #1 ITALIAN QSR FRANCHISE FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Sbarro has again been named the #1 Quick Service Restaurant in the Italian Segment by Entrepreneur magazine for the fourth year in a row.

The Sbarro restaurant chain, with over 1,000 units in 35 countries including the UK, Russia, Japan, Germany and Spain, has been #1 in this category in 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000. Factors considered when calculating the ranking include financial strength and stability, growth rate, and size of system.

"This is just the beginning," said Jerry Sbarro, President of Franchising and Licensing at Sbarro. "We are proud of our outstanding reputation and strive to continually meet the high expectations we are recognized for." With more than $575 million in sales last year alone, the company has remained the largest shopping center-based restaurant in the world. About 400 of Sbarro Italian Eatery's units are franchise units, and the company has more than 100 franchisees with multiple Sbarro locations. Venues include universities, airports, government buildings and entertainment complexes, as well as shopping centers.

Franchised businesses are considered vital to the health of the global economy. According to the International Franchising Association, franchising accounts for over 40 percent of all U.S. retail sales. In the year 2000 alone, analysts estimated that franchising companies and their franchisees accounted for $1 trillion in annual U.S. retail sales.

Based in Mellville, New York, Sbarro has been franchising since 1977. The Italian QSR is known for its signature dishes that date to "Mama" Sbarro's original recipes, and is one of the world's largest family-owned and operated pizza chains.
