The Solution to Indoor Air Pollution

It's a PHENOMENON THAT BEGAN ABOUT 25 YEARS ago. Rising energy costs made people re-think how their homes and business were built and insulated. Buildings began to get tighter, so air leaks didn't drive up heating and cooling costs. Furnaces and cooling systems became more efficient. And energy use went down.

But suddenly, people noticed that they were getting a number of new illnesses. And the problem was the air they were breathing. Tighter buildings meant less fresh air, and the dust, fungus, and other contaminants in the building's air meant that with the energy problem solved, there was another issue to handle.

Steamatic was the first and only company, which recognized the need 25 years ago to address indoor air quality. Through the years, Steamatic has created equipment and techniques specifically for improving indoor air quality, and the company has earned nine patents in this area.

One key service provided by Steamatic is cleaning of heating and air conditioning ductwork. Periodic cleaning controls microbial contaminants in the air, reduces odors, and increases air circulation. Cleaning can also lengthen the life of HVAC equipment by increasing the efficiency of air handlers, and cleaning can also reduce energy costs.

"This is something many people don't think about," said Tab Ballou, Owner of Ballou's Steamatic in Knoxville. "But you should consider cleaning your ductwork just as you think about cleaning your carpet, drapes, or upholstery." In fact, Steamatic has developed techniques for carpet and interior fabric cleaning based on what the company has learned from its work in indoor air quality.

Ballou said that one thing that makes his company different than others offering duct cleaning services is the company's technology. "We clean the duct system at all points; we then treat the system with a antimicrobial, and finally treat it with a particulate encapsulate to seal over and render harmless any remaining contaminants." Steamatic's vacuuming equipment moves more air than other systems, resulting in more efficient cleaning, and special tools designed for different types of ductwork maximize the efficiency of the process.

Independent testing shows that Steamatic cleaning reduces the level of fungi in indoor air by over 99%, and other microorganisms by an average of 72%. And Steamatic cleaning is ideal for commercial buildings. A list of local successfully completed projects include South Central Bell, Whittle Communications, and The University of Tennessee. Cleaner indoor air in businesses has resulted in less absenteeism and lower liability risks for companies.

Steamatic also specializes in cleaning homes damaged by fire. "This is something that is particularly difficult for most cleaners," said Ballou, "but our processes are so efficient that we can help restore furniture, draperies or other items that most people had given up on. We've spent 25 years developing solutions to indoor air pollution, and they work." For a free inspection of your forced air heating
