Big Boy Restaurants To Open New 'Fast Casual' Concept

WARREN, MICHIGAN | Tuesday, August 27, 2002

The MSU campus community and East Lansing residents will soon get to relive the era of '50s-style dining. Big Boy Restaurants International LLC will open a new Big Boy Original "fast casual" concept restaurant in East Lansing on August 26. This new Big Boy Original concept restaurant, to be located on the corner of Grand River and Abbot Avenue, is designed to be reminiscent of the original Big Boy diner of the '40s and '50s, which was the innovator of family dining restaurants. The Big Boy Original in East Lansing will have extended hours -- from 11 a.m. - 4 a.m., seven days a week. This will give East Lansing customers more time to enjoy the legendary Big Boy classics such as the original Big Boy double-decker hamburger, Slim Jims, fries, hand-breaded onion rings and hand- dipped shakes and malts made with the award-winning Big Boy ice cream. The interior decor of the Big Boy Original will resemble a '50s diner while embracing a contemporary retro style. The booths will be finished in chrome trim and both booths and stools will be covered with red or black sparkle vinyl fabric. The floor will be designed around the Big Boy signature red and white checks. "We're very excited about the opening of Big Boy Original -- our new 'fast casual' concept restaurant in East Lansing," said Tony Michaels, CEO of Big Boy Restaurants International LLC. "It's a departure from our traditional sit-down, full-service, full-menu restaurants. We promise customers a unique dining experience while enjoying a condensed menu focusing on the original lineup of Big Boy favorites that have made Big Boy great." To add to the new fast casual concept restaurant excitement, the Big Boy Original will feature a pop out graphics wall with changeable dialogue boxes. To create a more dramatic atmosphere, the ceiling is layered into nine- and ten-foot heights. The ten-foot portion is accentuated by red, white and blue neon lighting that will create different moods for different times of the day. The new Big Boy Original concept restaurant was designed by JGA Inc., a leading retail design, brand strategy and architecture firm in Southfield, Michigan.
