Al Colbert & Ja Ja Ball are recipients of the 2001 Pinnacle award and the proud owners of Colbert/Ball Tax Service.

This pair is serious about their business. Their success makes it look like there is no other tax service in the city. Seeking to cater to Houston’s under-served minority community, the care and compassion displayed by these two professionals is truly admirable.

From the 610 Loop in the Astrodome area, the Colbert/Ball trademark is exposed to hundreds of thousands of drivers. The emblem, symbolizing the company’s success, is perched atop the building located at 2616 South Loop West. It is at the corporate headquarters of Colbert/Ball. Many affectionately know this area as the “Black Wall Street” as it is virtually the largest hub of African American-owned business in Houston.

The first cousins are also dedicated to providing opportunities for non-African Americans through their Affiliate Program, which helps aspiring entrepreneurs enter the highly competitive tax business with some assurance of success.

Founded in 1995, Colbert/Ball Tax Service has experienced continuous growth since its beginning. In its first year, the company filed 270 tax returns. In the third year, over 1,800 were filed. The company’s current goals to significantly increase the number of individuals in the Affiliate Program and to file more than 30,000 tax returns in one season is highly ambitious, notes BBH’s publisher, Aubrey Taylor. But this pair is confident they will achieve them.

Colbert/Ball revealed that making their services available inside Fiesta grocery stores during the past five tax seasons has proven extremely profitable. In addition to expanding their number of clients, this undertaking also broadened their diversity of clientele. Company projections suggest revenue that could increase to over 18 million within the next three to five years! “If track records count for anything,” says Taylor, “Colbert/Ball Tax Service will experience unprecedented growth and success in the coming years. Without a doubt, Al and Ja Ja are among the most confident business owners I know.”
