Longtime Lee’s Ice Cream Operator Chooses Unique "Fresh-Mexican" Franchise Concept

When long-time Lee’s Ice Cream Shop owner Sam Wang decided to expand his franchise operations to include a restaurant brand, he took a good look at dozens of companies. He chose Desert Moon Fresh Mexican Grille, a unique brand in the Fast Casual category because of its system of quickly served yet made to order fresh menu items.

Mr. Wang explains “I saw the Desert Moon brand three years ago in the Dulles Town Center and knew I wanted one.” “I was already an operator in Tysons Corner, so I knew about the expansion and made my plan ahead of time. I secured the franchise and then waited two years as the mall remodeled and developed the new food court.

Mr. Wang opened his restaurant on October 1st as the Tysons Corner Mall conducted its Gala Grand Opening celebration. Fred J. Kirvan, Director of Brand Development for Desert Moon said “Sales have been very strong the first week. We’ve surpassed our expectation and far exceeded our opening sales prediction.” Desert Moon serves a menu of delicious hand made Burritos, Tacos & Salads the company calls "Fresh- Mexican.” Each item is made fresh to order and can be customized in a variety of ways to accommodate virtually any dietary restriction. “The folks in this area are craving a great tasting, fresh healthful alternative to the standard food court fast food. That’s what Desert Moon offers, an opportunity to have a choice when dining out. Good food that’s good for you!” Kirvan said.

Mr. Wang says he looked at dozens of franchise concepts before turning to Desert Moon. "I've seen so many other franchises, but what really impressed me with Desert Moon was the people behind the company, the quality of the food, and the rapid expansion plans for the next few years.” Their ability to build the brand and develop name recognition excited me.” said Wang, who is now considering opening more Desert Moons throughout the area. For Desert Moon Holdings Corp., the parent company of Mr. Wang’s restaurant, the new location marks the 18th unit. Unlike most Mexican fast food, Desert Moon prepares everything on-site, with a menu inspired by the lighter, fresher cuisine of Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California.
