First Location Planned to Open in Early 2005; Total of 20 Locations to be Developed

Kahala Corp., a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based franchiser of seven quick service restaurant concepts totaling more than 1,000 locations worldwide, announced today it has entered into an area development agreement with Sang Young Whang, a Southern California-based restaurateur and franchise developer, to open 20 Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill restaurant locations in the Orange County, California area.

According to the terms of the new agreement, Whang will open the first Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill location in early 2005. Whang has been a franchise operator for Kahala Corp.’s Surf City Squeeze Juice Bar concept in Southern California since 1996. Whang currently owns and operates four Surf City Squeeze locations in Southern California.

The announcement was made by Kevin Blackwell, chairman and chief executive officer of Kahala Corp., which franchises Great Steak & Potato, TacoTime, Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Gill, Ranch *1 Grilled Chicken, Frullati Caf & Bakery, Rollerz, and Surf City Squeeze restaurants throughout North America and in Puerto Rico, Japan, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Greece, Thailand, Taiwan and Australia.

“We are excited to continue our relationship with Sang Young Whang to expand the Samurai Sam’s concept in Orange County,” Blackwell said. “Kahala has been averaging one new franchised store opening every day in the United States, and this marks the second area development agreement for our Asian food concept in Southern California.” Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill specializes in grilled meats, vegetables, and prawns over rice, teriyaki bowls, tasty noodle dishes, specialty wraps, fresh garden salads, appetizers like grilled egg rolls, and related Asian cuisine, and provides party trays and catering for large groups. Entrepreneur Magazine named Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill the #1 Asian Fast Food concept in a recent annual Franchise 500 edition.

The Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill franchise network was founded in 1994 and has since expanded to 83 locations nationwide. Kahala Corp. franchises Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Montana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Washington, New York, Nebraska, and Texas.

Blackwell said “Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill provides a dining experience for people who are looking for healthy alternatives. Our meals are prepared with grilled, marinated chicken and steak, fresh vegetables and other fresh ingredients, and we believe that Southern California’s culture and lifestyle is perfect ground for food that not only tastes great, but is good for you.” “Based on our research we are very confident that the concept will be well received by the Orange County dining public,” Blackwell concluded.

WHang indicated she will actively seek prospective franchise owners throughout California who would “like to get in on the ground floor with a company that has unsurpassed growth opportunities. A key component to our growth will be our desire to enter into multi-store agreements.” ABOUT KAHALA CORP.
