Rockn’ Joe To Open In Westfield, N.j.

CRANFORD, NJ | Saturday, November 26, 2005

Rockn’ Joe Franchise Systems, the franchise company of Rockn’ Joe Coffeehouse and Bistro, today signed a franchise agreement to open a restaurant in downtown Westfield, N.J. this spring.

Lance Marvin and Lisa Bertone-Marvin, who reside in Westfield, have rented a 1,300-square-foot storefront at 20 Prospect St., a tree-lined street ideal for outdoor seating, located across from the Westfield Train Station.

“Lance and Lisa are an ideal fit for Rockn’ Joe,” said Kevin Brennan, company CEO, who founded the original Rockn’ Joe 12 years ago in downtown Cranford. “They are the perfect team. Lisa is an expert at customer service, while Lance has extensive experience in finance. Together, they are a great duo to launch a Rockn’ Joe in downtown Westfield.” Lance Marvin said the couple was attracted to Rockn’ Joe because it offers “the ideal business system,” including a superior menu of food and drink, a well-designed floor plan, attractive logos and other corporate identity, as well as a streamlined and simple business system that can easily be followed. “As soon as we met with Kevin and toured his coffeehouse in Cranford, I knew it would be the perfect fit for us,” said Lisa Bertone-Marvin, who looks forward to learning the first names of all her customers. “Rockn’ Joe is the type of franchise you are truly proud to own. It is a place where we want our friends and family to visit, and where I will enjoy going to work everyday.” The Westfield coffeehouse is scheduled to open at the same time as a Rockn’ Joe franchise at 3121 Bridge Ave. in Point Pleasant Borough, N.J., where workers are remodeling an auto parts store into a 4,000-square-foot establishment.

Unlike stale theme restaurants, where the experience runs its course after just one visit, Rockn’ Joe is the place that people want to visit often. It’s the local place to listen to fun, upbeat rock music, from an eclectic collection of music spanning the past 40 years. There is no rush to leave a Rockn’ Joe. In fact, the coffeehouse has been designed specifically for customers to linger and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, listen to great music and sample a wide variety of food and drink. That is why the original Rockn’ Joe in Cranford is a landmark, attracting customers from miles around.

“Over the past 12 years, there has been a lot of trial and error to create the system we now have in place,” Brennan said. “We offer franchisees a winning method to create their own landmark businesses. Working under the guidance and direction of corporate headquarters, with my direct oversight, franchisees such as Lance and Lisa will have everything they need to create a thriving business.” The centerpiece of Rockn’ Joe is the coffee. Brennan knew his coffeehouse would never succeed without a signature blend that people will always prefer over the high-end competition. Along with its secret bean selection and roasting technique, Rockn’ Joe coffees are made with specially-treated water a key component for consistently rich, flavorful drip coffee.

For the past five years, Rockn’ Joe’s coffee has clinched the “Golden Cup Award” from the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Award winners must annually submit a sample of their water and brewed coffee for laboratory analysis.

According to the National Coffee Association, daily consumption of specialty coffee among adults is at record highs, with 16 percent of the adult population drinking at least one cup a day. That number has spiked four percent since 2003. More than 55 percent of Americans adults say they drink specialty coffee on occasion.

Coffeehouses in the United States are more popular than ever, with 11,250 locations nationally averaging $550,000 in annual sales. The specialty coffee industry has grown to a $6.12 billion industry, according to the Specialty Coffee Association of America. The total coffee market, including cafes, kiosk, carts and retailers was at $8.96 billion in 2003, nearly a $1.5 billion increase from 1999.

Brennan said Rockn’ Joe has received interest from international investors, as well as from hundreds of people living throughout the country. He said the company is actively searching for the right franchisees people who are as dedicated as Brennan to making Rockn’ Joe the nation’s best franchise system.
