Former Journalist Opens Third Dippin’ Dots Location

When Matt Stahl opened his first Dippin’ Dots store in 2004, he wanted to eventually resign from his career as a journalist with The Cincinnati Enquirer and devote all his time to his new business. Ice cream, however, became a career a lot sooner than he expected.

Matt’s first Dippin’ Dots store opened last November at the Florence Mall in Florence, Kentucky. A second location came four months later and Matt realized it was time to make the change from writing about business to running his own.

“At that point, it was impossible for me to continue working full time and also run the business,” Stahl said.

Now, having established Dippin’ Dots presence in local malls Stahl is trying a different retail approach through an ice cream vending machine in Northgate Mall.

In August, Stahl opened a new full service store in Eastgate Mall in Cincinnati. The Eastgate store offers a dozen flavors of Dippin’ Dots. In addition to his store operations, Stahl offers party packs and catering for special events. For Stahl, Dippin’ Dots was the perfect business venture. “My family saw Dippin’ Dots in a mall in Atlanta last year,” Stahl said. “We thought it would be neat to have a Dippin’ Dots kiosk in our area mall. We checked to see if franchises were available and before we knew it we owned our own franchise.” In January, Dippin’ Dots Franchising, Inc. ranked number one on Franchise Times Magazine’s Fast 55 annual listing. The list names Dippin’ Dots Franchising, Inc. as the fastest growing young franchise in the nation.

Dippin’ Dots are tiny, cryogenically frozen beads of ice cream, yogurt, sherbet and flavored ice. Invented in 1988 by microbiologist and entrepreneur Curt Jones, Dippin’ Dots offers more than 20 different flavors, plus seasonal flavors. The company’s administrative and production headquarters are located in Paducah, Kentucky. Dippin’ Dots are sold in 250 retail locations and thousands of entertainment venues and special events nationwide. The company’s Global division oversees licensees in nine countries.
