Creating Island Escapes Is What Bahama Buck's Does

ABILENE. | Tuesday, January 10, 2006

Stepping through the door at a Bahama Buck's, customers immediately meet the sound of Caribbean music, the smell of island flavors and the whimsical sound of blocks of ice transforming into shaved ribbons of snow. Close your eyes. It's the intoxicating island escape experience of Bahama Buck's. "You can always tell when it's someone's first time in here. They just look around and say 'Wow,'" says Glenn Sims, the Abilene native who owns the Bahama Buck's franchise on Buffalo Gap Road. "Walking in, they never realize there is an island oasis smack in the middle of Abilene." Creating island escapes is what Bahama Buck's does. As the nation's premier tropical dessert franchise they are well known for a vast array of flavorings that cover the "greatest snow on earth." "Cheesecake Bahama Rama Mama," says Sims with a smile, "is my absolute favorite." Lavonne, Glenn's wife of 36 years chides "that's this weeks favorite, it keeps changing every week with Glenn." Glenn winks.

A graduate of Baylor University, Sims received a bachelor's degree in Business Management and Marketing. Sims is no stranger to working for himself. Since 1976 he's owned and operated grocery and convenience stores. After looking at various franchise opportunities, Sims kept coming back to Bahama Buck's. "It just matched up perfectly with me. I've always enjoyed working for myself, and I was getting tired of learning through the school of hard knocks," he says "Bahama Buck's provided a great franchise system and gave me the opportunity to create a fun place to work." Not only did Glenn fulfill his contining desire to be his own boss, he also has the privilege of working with family, his son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Summer Sims. "That's been one of the best parts of owning a Bahama Buck's shop, working with both Lance and Summer." Opening to much fanfare, the people of Abilene seem to agree. "We've got the best customers in the world," says Lance Sims, bragging on the residents of Abilene. Both Summer and Lance enjoy working with their fellow Texans and each other. "You meet a lot of wonderful people here everyday," says Summer, "we've really been blessed to be able to work together; it's been a great experience." Sims couldn't agree more. In fact, he is currently searching for his second location in Abilene. Each of the Sims convey great pride and joy in Bahama Buck's. With strong family ties, Glenn Sims is enjoying the sweet taste of success. Next week's flavor - Jungle Berry with Creme.
