Use Baking Soda In The Laundry For Brighter, Whiter, Softer, Cleaner Results

Saturday, April 15, 2006

Doing laundry can be a pleasure when your clothes come out the way you want them to - clean, sweet smelling and fresh. Baking soda does the trick. Put about a quarter cup in the laundry. It helps soften and boosts cleaning power. It's excellent for cleaning shower curtains - in or out of the washing machine. A reader writes this: When my children were young (40 years ago!) a crayon got all over the clothes from being left in a pocket and then dried in the dryer and I remember the hint to dump a box of baking soda in the washing machine and wash the clothes over. I don't remember if it took more than one washing, but I know it got the crayon out of the clothes. Great in laundry to remove cigar/cigarette smells and stains. A quarter cup of it in your baby's laundry will help keep down rashes. Sprinkle a little baking soda in your laundry hamper or basket to keep down odors. Clean suede by sprinkling with baking soda and then brushing off. Scuff marks from white shoes, purses or other items, can often be cleaned with a paste of baking soda and water. If you're going to be gone from home for a week or longer, sprinkle the inside of your washing machine to eliminate odors and possible mold from forming. Perspiration stains will launder out if you rub in a paste of baking soda and vinegar and let it set overnight. Used a paste made with it and water to clean the bottom of your iron. Be sure to wipe it off completely. Give teddy bears and other stuffed animals a "shower" with baking soda. Sprinkle on, wait a while, brush off excess. Keeps them from getting so grungy! This reader says: I'd left a couple of blankets in the trunk of my car for a year...along with some rotting wood, an old tire and other nasty car stuff. I washed the blankets with detergent and bleach but the musty/funky smell wouldn't go away. Then I tried baking soda and vinegar (unmeasured...just desperate pouring), and they came out smelling new. I'm never using bleach again. I use baking soda in the washer when washing my clothes for deer hunting. It takes away any unwanted scent out of the clothes. I've been using it for this purpose for years with great success, and it's much cheaper than paying ten dollars and up for detergent made for hunting clothes.
