Model For Child Play

ANNANDALE, N.J | Thursday, July 03, 2008

It started with a beanbag chair, old ladder and an ironing board as a ramp in a carriage house when the program was initially offered. It is now a fast-growing franchise that focuses on "the parent/child play experience." The concept was conceived and developed by a mother of four young children, Linda Searles of New Jersey. Now with eight franchises in five states, Baby Power(R) Forever-Kids(TM) is attracting business-minded Moms, who want more control over their lives and to be available for their children. See http://www.babypower.com. "The need for family-friendly businesses are higher than ever," says Searles. "Self-employment for a mother offers them more control over their daily lives, a more flexible schedule, no boss to report to, and the ability to utilize their own entrepreneurial spirit." A fast-paced blend of music, gym, crafts and games, Baby Power & Forever-Kids is becoming the new model for children's play programs. Instead of focusing on any one aspect of a child's development, the curriculum taps into a child's cognitive, creative and physical coordination skill sets. Each forty-five to seventy-five minute class keeps kids, along with their parents, engaged in learning by constantly introducing fun activities within a familiar and comfortable routine. The classes are specially designed for children ages 6-months through 6-years. "Running a business is a lot like raising a family," say Ellen Parlipiano, co-author of the book Mompreneurs. "You have to be organized and patient, and Moms, she noted, tend to be more careful with budgets than other entrepreneurs. They grow their business slowly, becoming bigger as their children become more independent." Searles' original one-woman operation is now grown into an attractive investment for other business-minded Moms. As a trained musician and gymnast, Searles recorded all the music for the Centers and designed the gym to meet the needs of children as they grow. While she was beginning the process of forming a franchise company, she was sidelined by a family tragedy. It was growing the business and working with children that helped her heal.
